Elephants

African Elephant, Loxodonta africana
The Ngorongoro crater, Tanzania

Appearance
Unmistakable. A huge animal height almost equal to length. Height at shoulders up to 4 meters and weight up to 6000 kg. In spite of their massive body they move quite freely but are not able to take leaps. They mainly lives in forested savanna but occurs in rainforests as well as in semi dessert areas. As they have to drink every day they never lives far from water though.

Eating Habits
They constantly move around, mostly during the night, in search for food. Much of their time is spent feeding. The Elephant is both a grazer and a browser, eating a variety of vegetable matters as leaves, twigs, shoots, bark etcetera. And they eat a lot...a single animal consumes up to 300kg per day. Their eating habits can even cause deforestation. An adult elephant has no natural enemy and their lifespan is 60-70 years.

Habits
The Elephants are gregarious, living in herds of 10-20 heads or more. The herd usually includes a master bull but are led by an old female. They have a high sense of sociability in helping each other and taking care of the newborn and deceased. When socializing they can get very noisy, having a variety of sound to communicate. They are capable of producing a strange rumbling sound, yet not clearly understood, perhaps used for long distance communications. Normally they are very intelligent and tolerant animals, but they are also known to be unpredictable.
