Warthog

Warthog, Phacochoerus aethiopicus
Family: Suidae (Swine)
Masai Mara, Kenya

Appearance
The Warthog is a ugly-like animal with long body and a big head. Face is flattened and the muzzle wide with brush like whiskers. The male weight up to 150 kg, but the female only half as much. It has got its name from having two pair of big warts in their face, one pair below the eyes, the other proximal to the tusks. The tusks have a strange circular form, turning outwards-upwards-inwards creating a sharp cutting weapon. The coat is almost naked and uniform in color.

Habits
The Warthog lives on the open savannas, mostly where water is available but also in very dry areas. It's gregarious and lives mostly in families with male, female and litters. Old male sometimes lives solitary. They shelter in burrows or hollows during night and feeds mainly during daytime. The warthog is essentially a grazer, eating short grasses and herbs and while gazing they often goes down on their "knees" in a characteristic way.
